If you’ve been waiting for life to calm down before giving yourself permission to feel good, this post is for you. Joy isn’t something you earn after the storm passes—it’s what carries you through.

If you’re waiting for the “all clear” before you let yourself laugh, celebrate, or soften into a moment of ease, you’re draining your reserves while you need them most.
Joy isn’t indulgence.
It’s fuel.
This is the secret resilience offers:
When you give yourself permission to feel good in the middle of the challenge, you create space in your system. Space to breathe. Space to choose. Space to keep going without burning out.
It’s not denial.
It’s strategy.
Because your nervous system doesn’t only respond to problems—it responds to pleasure. A song that lifts you. A walk that steadies you. The taste of something you savor.
These are not “extras.”
They’re part of how you carry the load.
Lately I’ve been noticing how complicated joy can feel.
It’s not always the carefree emotion we imagine. Sometimes when joy shows up, there’s a part of me that braces—like it is somehow inappropriate and I might get caught.
Almost as if happiness, when things are hard, feels like a betrayal.
Maybe you know that feeling too?
That fear of leaning in too far, as if joy might slip away the second you trust it?
I’ve been sitting with this and realizing: joy isn’t fragile. It’s not a trick life plays on us. It’s a resource we’re meant to lean into, especially when things are uncertain.
Think about it:
The last time you were in a really hard season, what carried you through? The grit, yes. But also those flashes of light that reminded you who you are beyond the struggle.
That’s what allows you to rise with strength instead of bracing against life.
The Heart of It
Joy and ease aren’t rewards for “getting through”—they’re part of how you get through.
And you don’t need anyone’s permission to claim them.
Something to Explore
Where can I let more lightness in, even now?
It doesn’t have to be grand:
A deep breath with your hand on your heart
A phone call with someone who makes you laugh
Music that moves you
Small doors into joy.
Each one a thread of resilience.
What’s one small joy you’ll say yes to today?
I’d love to hear. Share it with me over on Instagram.
