Feeling a little scattered lately? Low-key drained for no clear reason? The content you’re consuming might be part of it. In this post, I’m not giving you rules or restrictions. I’m sharing five simple (and human) shifts that can help you clear the noise, reclaim your energy, and feel more like yourself again—all without quitting the internet.
Ever notice how a 30-second scroll can hijack your mood?
It’s sneaky. You open your phone to “check something,” and next thing you know, you’re deep in a rabbit hole you didn’t ask for—half-distracted, low-key agitated, wondering why your energy feels off.
Yeah. That.
We underestimate how much the content we consume influences our nervous system, our mindset, and the pace we live at. But if you're craving something different—more space, more steadiness, more room to breathe—this is a really good place to start.
And no, I’m not here to tell you to delete all your apps or become a monk. Just… bring some choice back into the mix.
When I decided to clear my YouTube history to reset what it was “feeding” me, I was surprised at how weirdly hard it felt.
Not dramatic. Just... sticky.
What if I need to find that video again or lose something useful?
Totally irrational, I know. But that’s how our brains work. The familiar—even if it’s noisy or draining—can feel safer than the unknown.
The amygdala doesn’t care if the habit is helpful. It just sees “normal” and says, “Keep this.”
So, if you feel a little tension or hesitation when you try to shift something, don’t overthink it.
It’s just noise. You’re doing something new. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re meeting the edge of your comfort zone—and gently expanding it. And that’s kind of the whole point.
Let's reset your content diet in 5 simple (and doable) moves:
1. Do a Content Audit
Start with awareness. For one day, just notice what’s coming in—news, reels, emails, playlists, the whole stream. No shame, no overthinking.
Try this: Set a reminder labeled “Content Check” a couple of times a day. Pause, take 30 seconds, and jot down what you’ve taken in.
Your brain might groan. Do it anyway. The clarity’s worth it.
2. Tune In to How It Feels
Not all content is harmful, but not all of it lands well either. Track how it actually leaves you feeling.
Try this: Pick one thing you consume today and ask: How do I feel after this? Energized? Drained? Calm? On edge?
If you start justifying it—“But I like this even though I feel kind of gross after”—notice that. That’s gold.
3. Unfollow or Mute
If something consistently feels off, overwhelming, or like a subtle hit to your worth? You’re allowed to walk away. Permission granted!
Try this: Unfollow or mute just one account today that no longer feels aligned. Start there.
Yes, even if it’s that popular voice everyone else seems to love.
4. Curate with Intention
Seek out people and content that nourish you. That expand your thinking—not your stress levels.
Try this: Follow one new voice today—someone who makes you feel a little more like “YOU.”
Choose from inspiration, not obligation. It makes a difference.
5. Create Buffer Zones
The first and last moments of your day set the tone. Guard them like they matter. Because they do.
Try this: Pick one: no screens for the first 10 minutes of your day or the last 10 before sleep. Just a little pocket of space.
Start with whichever seems easier, then go for both. Notice what changes.
The Heart of It ...
Every piece of content you consume either fuels you or drains you.
And the good news? You choose what stays.
Start small. One pattern at a time.
You don’t need a digital detox—you just need a little more intention.
And from there?
That space you’ve been craving starts to show up on its own.
